Review: Super73-ZX is a fantastic electric moped with serious California vibes.
The Super73 fame is ahead of itself, the company is best known for its SoCal lifestyle image as a hot-selling electric moped-style bike.
I’ve ridden my fair share of Super73 e-bikes and I’ve enjoyed each one so far. And when the company gave me the chance to test out their new model, the Super73-ZX, I had a wonderful experience.

Super73-ZX
The company hosted a press event at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles to experience the new look of the Super73’s popular entry-level Z-series.
I have tested almost all of the Super73 models over the years and have been able to review some of the aggressive models in the company lineup.
But in addition to the crazy-powerful, full-suspension and giant-battery versions they offer, they also have more mild models starting at a more reasonable price.
I tested the company’s most affordable model, the Super73-Z1, about two years ago. While this is mostly good, my biggest grip is the stiffer seat that isn’t as comfortable as the Super73’s other rides.
To my delight, the Super73-ZX greeted me with a more comfortable brand-new seat design. It still retains the same shape and texture that I liked (mostly it looks great), but it is included in some much needed quality foam.
Battery
But that was not the only change. Under the seat I found a large battery that was actually removable. This is another big improvement over the Z1, as the battery can go a long way and get off the bike for easy charging.
Removable batteries are a must, as they cannot be pulled into the garage to live in an apartment and charge a bike. So I was happy to see that the Super73 got along with the program and brought the removable battery to their only model.
The extra range from the 615 Wh battery means the fun ride can go even further. And since the bike is definitely a throttle-optimised bike, a larger battery is more important.
Pedal & Throttle
There is pedal assist and throttle control, but Super73 e-bikes are always throttle-first. After riding the pedal-assist-only Super73 in Germany (EU laws do not allow throttle), I was surprised at how pedal-friendly it was. When I returned to the town and they put the throttle back in my hand, I was definitely happy to have it.
If you really enjoy pedalling, you’ll be glad to know that the Super73 offers an optional 10-speed transmission. But for me, that throttle is a lot of fun and I don’t see myself pedalling on these moped style e-bikes.
Suspensions
When it comes to suspensions, it’s another optional upgrade. The Super73 can add a suspension fork to the ZX for more money, but to be honest, I don’t think you need it.
I tested the standard version without the suspension and I found that the giant 4-inch fat tires had all the shock absorption I needed.
Experience
My friend joined me for a test ride, and he found the bike quite comfortable. He never reads this so I can come out and say: He’s a bit specific in terms of bicycle comfort and it’s hard to please in the e-bike category. Unlike me, a happy idiot who loves to ride, he is more rational. So the fact that he found the bike so comfortable says a lot.
As he explains, it is a combination of comfortable riding and smooth energy. He’s not usually a speed freak, but he’s definitely enjoying the Super73-ZX with a maximum power of 1,300W. Striking 28 mph on a bike like this will bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Technically the bike is listed as 750W nominal, which puts the road legally in its first three models as a Class 2 or Class 3 e-bike. It can reach up to 20 mph (32 km / h) on the throttle and 28 mph (45 km / h) when you add in pedalling. Or you can put it in mode 4 and enjoy ripping on the throttle up to its maximum speed of 28 mph, no pedalling required.
It’s hard to really doing the Super73-ZX anywhere. It’s speedy, it’s dynamical, it’s pleasant, it’s enjoyable. What’s not to like? And now that ergonomics has gotten a big update, riding is easier than ever.
At its current price of $ 1,995, I would have liked to see some hydraulic disc brakes, but the mechanical brakes still work fine. My friend’s strong hands looked good to them. So I usually like to see juice brakes at this price point, as the Super73-ZX fits well with the mechanical tektro brakes.
And at 62 lb (28.4 kg), it’s not heavy (at least according to e-bike standards). The aluminium frame helps to reduce weight and the minimalist design means that you don’t have to roll an extra metal bunch.
It’s still not as lightweight as a cute little folding bike if you ever have to lug it to the subway, but it’s not really such a bike.
This is for anyone who wants an old school moped experience on the e-bike platform. Wind in your-hair on the open road in your classic moped vibe without mixing two-stroke gas or kick-starting your bike. The old school meets the new school, combining the classic charm and modern e-bike technology woven by the Super73 to bring all this power and range at an affordable price.
In fact, I’d say this is exactly the kind of urban electric ride that Harley-Davidson wants to deliver, but today’s generation is joining the Super73. And I can see
