Eugene-based Electric Mobility Company Archimoto has transformed its three-wheeled Electric Fun Utility Vehicle with Silicon Valley Autonomous Driving Startup Faction Technology into a “driverless” pod for last-mile deliveries.
The freight-free flavor of Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV) follows last year’s revelation of the driverless Archimoto prototype, which is remotely controlled by human workers, represents a step towards future ride-on-demand service.
“Driverless autonomy combines with the ability to remotely assist when you need it, because the magic is really there when the vehicle is driverless,” said Ain McKendrick, Founder and CEO of Faction.
For a three-wheeled cargo application, Archimoto engineers basically dismantled steering controls such as seats and motorcycles, added side panels and cargo compartments, and implemented a three-wheel vehicle with autonomous driving technology such as cameras, radar and lidar. Unlike efforts such as Nuro and Mobileye / Udelv, the Arcimoto D1 does not seem to aim to cut humanity out of the driverless equation entirely, as the company mentions combining autonomy with remote operation but certainly not man. Driver Onboard.

Because it is based on the FUV platform, the D1 has a maximum speed of 75 mph (120 km / h) and offers a per-charge all-electric range of over 100 miles (160 km). According to Archimoto, it is expected to carry 500 lb (226.8 kg) of cargo per trip, though no details have been provided on how customers will access the goods on the roadside – perhaps a mobile app or a secure key code game.
The partnership believes that cargo compartment can be customized to suit the needs of fleet operators and that commercial service costs for delivery operations should be less than US $ 2 per mile.
“We’re thrilled to be working with the Faction team to support driverless development on the Archimoto platform,” said Mark Fronmayer of Archimoto. “With the overall purpose of deploying ultra-green electric powered vehicles, the economic release of the Driverless D1 might be a game-changer for last-mile logistics”
Faction is looking to launch a trial this year and is now opening pre-production vehicles for potential fleet customers. Production is expected to begin in 2023.
And this is not a three-wheeled EV driverless technology partnership signed by Faction this month. Last week, Startup signed a memorandum of understanding with Electromechanica to install driverless and remote operation technology on that company’s Solo EV platform for food distribution and ride-on-demand pilot experiments.
