Harley-Davidson’s new low-cost electric motorcycle coming under the LiveWire sub-brand in Q2

Harley-Davidson is showing a high 32% return on its positive 2021 earnings report.  Even more exciting news for electric motorcycle fans is the company’s earnings call, with its next electric motorcycle, LiveWire Del Mar debuting next quarter.

The company Harley-Davidson made a splash in 2019 when it launched its first production electric motorcycle, LiveWire.  In 2021, Harley-Davidson decided to diversify its advanced electric motorcycle operations into a sub-brand called LiveWire.

The company announced late last year that the LiveWire brand will go public with the SPAC agreement expected to be completed by the end of Q2 2022.

Also coming up this year is Q2: LiveWire’s next electric motorcycle model is called Del Mar.

The news was confirmed by Harley-Davidson CEO Jochen Zeitz in the company’s earnings call.

LiveWire Del Mar is the first bike produced on LiveWire’s new ARROW platform, designed as a low-cost foundation for many new electric motorcycle models.

Instead of the traditional frame found in LiveWire One, the new name for Harley-Davidson LiveWire after the sub-brand spinoff, the ARROW platform uses a structured battery pack that greatly changes the frame.

The battery is designed internally by Harley’s LiveWire engineers and includes 21700-format cylindrical Li-ion battery cells.

Unlike the complicated Revelation motor in LiveWire One, which requires the bevel gear to move parallel to the long axis of the bike and rotate the output shaft by 90 degrees, the ARROW platform appears to be equipped with a simple direct-drive motor co-axially.  Swingarm.  This is the design we’ve seen before, perhaps the most famous of the Zero SR / F and SR / S electric motorcycles.

We don’t know much about the specifications or performance of the Del Mar, which the company describes as “the foundation for powerful, nimble electric motorcycles and future variants.”

Those future variants are less clear, though Harley already has plans for the S3 and S4 models, which could be lighter and more affordable electric motorcycles.

As it stands, LiveWire One is currently priced at $ 21,999, a significant decrease from the original H-D LiveWire debut in 2019 of $ 29,799.

Del Mar helps lower the price of LiveWire, making it more competitive with other major electric motorcycle manufacturers.

The Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire team is also working on other lightweight electric motorcycles and mopeds.  Two Harley-Davidson concepts for the electric dirt bike and the e-moped have appeared occasionally over the years.  Electric moped is an interesting way for the company to capture market share with younger riders, especially with lightweight wallets.

Harley-Davidson calls their electric bicycle project a new e-bike startup called Serial1.

We tested e-bikes before they were released to the public and were quite impressed with the build quality and features list, including items such as the built-in glove box not found on electric bicycles.

The company has seen strong demand for its e-bikes, especially for the new e-bike startup in the premium segment.  Interestingly, the company has incorporated marketing strategies from the traditional electric bicycle industry and the Harley-inspired motorcycle industry.  Serial1 has undertaken several custom one-off projects for thematic e-bikes, building a beautiful one-of-a-kind bike that retails for thousands of dollars more than retail, benefiting charities in the process.

Serial 1 has also produced a hilarious short film that takes advantage of its “out-of-state” scavenger cycling snobs and generally old-school lycra-clad cycling culture, in favour of a more inclusive cycling world with electric bikes.
