Engineers Race to Develop Wireless EV Charging Technology 

Researchers at the University of Alto in Finland have developed a new method of power transfer, which can charge devices that need to be moved without the need for messy cables or plugs.  Wireless charging tiles are placed on a large surface such as the warehouse floor so that the devices can be powered from any level.  If scaled up, technology can be applied to power electric vehicles while on the road.

In collaboration with Finnish firm Soltech Robotics, the research team tested the design with commercial warehouse robots.  “Getting this technology out of the lab and working in the warehouse is an exciting moment for me personally,” says Prasad Jayaturatna, a postdoctoral researcher who heads the project.  I finally got ten years of research out of the lab.

As the recent press release explained, the transmitters are mounted on a grid, and the current in the neighbouring transmitters moves in the opposite direction, creating a chessboard-like grid of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ transmitting coils with magnetic flux between them.  The receiver then captures the magnetic flux between the positive and negative transmitters, which generates a current to charge the device.

The system operates without any positional tracking or communication between receivers and transmitters.  This means that power is transferred to the receiver rather than the entire area, making it possible to charge several devices at once.  When tested, the researchers found that the devices charge smoothly even when moving.

‘The beauty of our method is that it is very simple but quite sophisticated,’ he says to Jayaturatna.  ‘We don’t need high-end processors or enough calculations to make transmitters intelligent.  At the end of the day, this is all electromagnetic systems and our method is to find out how we can electromagnetism the presence and position of the receiver.

The next challenge is to increase the power level from about 1 kW to about 20 kW so that technology can be used to charge EVs.  ‘There are practical plans for electrification of roads around the world,’ he tells Jayaturatna.  ‘Electric vehicles are a really good application of this technology.
