Union Minister Nitin Gadkari
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday launched India’s first Green Hydrogen based Advanced Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) Toyota Mirai and said it was the first such project aimed at creating an ecosystem for such vehicles in India. Country. Speaking at the event, Gadkari said, hydrogen-powered FCEV is one of the best zero-emission solutions.
It is completely environmentally friendly and there is no tailpipe emission other than water, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways said.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor is powered by the Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Battery Pack and claims to be capable of delivering up to 600 km on a single charge with a five minute refuel time.
Gadkari said green hydrogen can be generated from renewable energy and abundant available biomass. He noted that the introduction and adoption of technology that exploits the potential of green hydrogen will play an important role in securing a clean and affordable energy future for India.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, in conjunction with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), is conducting a pilot project to study and evaluate the world’s most advanced FCEV Toyota Mirai, which runs on hydrogen in Indian roads and weather conditions. The event was attended by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Power Minister RK Singh and Heavy Industries Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey.
Gadkari had previously said that he would also start using the Toyota Mirai. Toyota Mirai was launched in 2014 and is one of the first hydrogen fuel electric vehicles in the world, the company said. “Now, we are proud to introduce the second generation, with a 30 per cent increase in range, better handling and sharper styling,” Toyota said.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Road Transport said India was committed to a low carbon route to achieve clean energy and accelerated economic growth. That said, hydrogen is a key component of the energy strategy and plays an important role in low carbon energy pathways.
The statement noted that green hydrogen offers great opportunities to decarbonize several sectors, including road transport, and is gaining unprecedented momentum globally.
