Okinawa will launch a new electric scooter called the Okhi 90 in the next few days, which has already been teased online

In recent years there has been a marked increase in demand for electric bikes, especially scooters. With the sharp rise in fuel prices over the past few months, consumers have been slowly but gradually shifting towards electric mobility. This has led to the release of many electric bikes over the past year or so.

Okinawa Autotech, one of the leading EV manufacturers in the country’s two-wheeler industry, will soon launch a new electric scooter. Prior to its release on 24 March 2022, the Gurugram-based EV brand teased the upcoming battery-powered scooter on its social media handles. What do you think about Okhi.?

Recently, a test mule of the Okhi 90s wrapped under camouflage has been spotted, which looks like a model ready for production. Its pre-production prototype was previewed in the last version of Auto eXpo in 2020. In terms of its exterior desigèn, the Okhi 90 co-ordinates a pair of LED DRLs and a wide front apron and turn indicator.

The single-pod LED headlamp cluster is mounted on the handlebar but the rear view mirrors are decorated in chrome with a previously marked test mule. The scooter runs on large alloy wheels but the thicker floorboard indicates that the battery panels are mounted beneath the scooter, providing better stability for the scooter.

Other notable highlights include an elevated pillion seat, a chunky single-piece, silver-finished grab rail that extends to form an adequate luggage rack on the back and a wider tail lamp. It gets a wide LED tail lamp reminiscent of the Aprilia SXR 160.

Expected battery specifications

Details on its powertrain are yet to be revealed, but reports suggest that the Okhi 90 will feature a removable lithium-ion battery pack, which can deliver 150-180km on a single charge. Using a fast charger, the battery can get up to 80 percent of its juice in 60 minutes. It is expected to have speeds of about 80-90 kmph.

Expected features and hardware

Coming to the features, the Okhi 90 will be offered with a fully digital instrument console enabled with Bluetooth connectivity. Displays critical information such as speed, distance to charge, etc. The system features an embedded e-SIM that offers a host of connected features such as geo-fencing, navigation, diagnostics and more. The e-scooter also comes with two drive modes – the Eco and Power, which can be toggled on the right side of the switchgear.

Speaking of hardware, from its looks, the suspension setup on the Okhi 90 features straight telescopic forks on the front and dual shock absorbers on the rear. Braking duties are handled by disc brakes on both ends and perhaps assisted by ABS. The scooter will be manufactured at Okinawa’s new plant in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan, which was inaugurated a few weeks ago.
