Frank Muhlone, CEO of ABB e-Mobility, said: “The inauguration of our new Waldarno facility highlights ABB e-Mobility’s commitment to building a zero-emission future. We can maintain the reputation, deliver future-proof e-mobility solutions for today’s vehicles. And tomorrow. “
The new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant sets a new benchmark for the sector, producing a DC speed charger every 20 minutes thanks to its seven production lines. The 15 testing facilities are capable of simulating more than 400 charging sessions per day, but integrated automation solutions connect the store floor to an innovative automated warehouse, optimised stock control, complete detection and efficient operation, supported by AGVs and handling vehicles.

Additionally, the new facility supports the continuous running of ABB E-Mobility Innovation. After investing 14 percent of revenues in 2021 into R&D, the Valdarno space will have 3,200m2 of space for development and prototyping. Here, about 70 of the site’s 500-plus employees dedicate innovative solutions, new software and product lifecycle management tools to fully integrate R&D activities with production. ABB E-Mobility employs over 350 R&D experts globally and has a portfolio of over 350 patents.
The Valdarno facility aims to achieve gold-level LEED certification – a globally recognized independent standard for the design, construction and operation of environmentally friendly buildings. Rainwater is collected for irrigation use, 100 percent of the production waste is recycled and the entire energy needs are met by certified renewable sources – the photovoltaic system delivers 720MWh of electricity and prevents 338 tonnes of CO2 per year.
The site’s power distribution is thanks to ABB Ability Energy and Asset Manager, a platform that monitors and efficiently manages more than 9,000 devices across the facility, including thermal regulation, lighting and air handling units – resulting in 60 percent energy savings. Comparison with traditional solutions.
Through its Sustainability Strategy 2030, ABB is committed to enabling a low-carbon society by supporting consumers in reducing their CO2 emissions and achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations. With transportation accounting for 29 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions, the development and production of smart, reliable charging solutions in Valdarno enable a rapid environmental transition toward the most efficient electric vehicles of any range: from cars to buses and heavy vehicles.
