2022 Lucid Air: The First 500-Mile EV Manufacturer Should Be Considered

Created by engineers with years of EV experience, the 2022 Lucid Air is a stunning debut against a new rival, Tesla and Mercedes-Benz.

A long time to come, but the 2022 Lucid Air is well worth the wait.  The all-electric luxury sedan will not only compete directly with the ageing Tesla Model S, but will also compete with the brand-new Mercedes-Benz EQS.  And Lucid’s Dream Edition range features a 520-mile EPA-rated range, the highest for EVs sold in 2022.

Clearly executives say the goal is always to make an all-electric competitor the classic Mercedes S-Class – a polite dismissal notion that the Model S is the goal of any kind.  In light of that, it’s noteworthy that Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson was the lead engineer at Model S a decade ago.

As a Lucid exec told this reporter several years ago (after anonymity guaranteed), “We think we can do as Tesla did – but better.”

Compact outside, Spacious  interior

The dimensions of the 2022 Lucid Air are difficult to see from the outside.  In Mercedes terms, the company claims that it has the (mid-size) footprint of the E-Class sedan, but also the wheelbase and (full-size) S-Class’s cabin space.  In fact, the Air’s short nose and tail, at least overhangs and long wheelbase gasoline offer different luxury sedans.  Most importantly, though, it doesn’t look “awkward” and many buyers can’t articulate why it looks different.

Nowadays, the gold of colour is irrevocably associated with the rod age (usually found in old lady Lexus models).  With contrasting silver roof tiles, the Eureka Gold works so well in the Air Sedan that it is the signature colour of the Dream Edition Launch Edition.  The other distinctive colour of Lucid is the deeper glossy maroon metallic with silver columns – and it looks stunning.  Inside, buyers have a choice of interior themes (“looks,” really), each with a different kind of luxury environment.  For example, get the 520 Launch Dream editions of “Santa Monica,” which combines perforated nappa leather, alcantara, buffed metal and open-pore eucalyptus wood.

Derek Jenkins, senior vice president of design and brand at Lucid, said the whole goal was to “calm down”, which would give drivers and passengers the luxury of relaxing and interacting in new and unfamiliar ways.  In other words, yes, the Lucid Air has some switches and knobs: not every function is controlled by a central touchscreen.  Other executives echoed Jenkins’ quiet elegance theme, trying not to be “talky” and using phrases that contradict other luxury cars that “sound a little”.

Capacity cabin, optional foot garages

The cabin space is large, although it is particularly expensive due to its low elevation.  Inside, the glass ceiling feels open – its single-piece glass windshield actually reaches from the cowl to the driver’s head, an elegant triumph.  However, Lucid has been successful in providing proper sun visors, which are intended to solve the same problem with a similar piece of glass, unlike the exotic Tesla Model X units.

Its single-piece glass windshield actually reaches from the cowl to the rear of the driver’s head, an elegant triumph.

Still, the legroom is generous front and rear.  In the lower-range model, the rear seat is a little more pleasant, which eliminates a couple of battery modules that provide depressions on the floor, which provide additional footwell space (now known by the German word foot garages).

Other manufacturers can make luxury, including Mercedes, the first of many luxury brands.  It seems safe to say that the Air and the new EQS are roughly the same in materials and quality, but the EQS offers more features (five different types of massage built into each front seat, one of many examples).

   Every aspect of efficiency

This separates the car’s drivetrain from each of the Lucid Air’s efficiency concerns and focus.  Consider the specs of the high-end, all-wheel-drive models of each of the three competitors.

Tesla’s Model S Long Range has the smallest battery capacity at 100 kWh, making it a combined EPA-rated range of 405 miles.  The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic has a large battery, 120 kWh (108 kWh usable), but a shorter range: 340 miles.  Air’s battery capacity is 118 kWh – both overall and usable, says Lucid.  How does it work? “Lucid Hardware and Software specialises withinside the use of complete strength even as maintaining battery lifestyles and saving rapid charging overall performance in warm and bloodless weather.” In different words: “We’re now no longer saying.”

Compared to the Mercedes-Benz EQS, the Lucid battery has a 9 percent higher capacity – though it produces a 520 mile range rating, or 53 percent more.

Compared to the Benz, the Lucid battery has a 9 percent higher capacity – though it produces a 520 mile range rating, or 53 percent more.  Similarly, Lucid has 18 percent more battery capacity than Tesla, but 28 percent more coverage.  Viewed as a rated ratio of battery power, the Lucid offers about 9 percent more than the Model S and 40 percent more than the Benz.

During his interview with CEO Rawlinson in mid-2020, when the company first planned a 500-plus mile rating, he returned to focus on engineers’ obsession with efficiency.  A two-year hiatus from 2017 to 2019, when Lucid sought funding to build his Arizona factory and produce air, gave engineers the opportunity to do several iterations of the power plant in particular.

After the break, the engineers doubled the battery voltage by the standard 400 volts.  It is now rated at 800-924 volts.  In turn, more than 250 kW of ultra-fast DC charging is allowed to be used – pioneered by Porsche, and still listed by some EV manufacturers (including Hyundai-Kia).  Lucid also has two-way charging, providing up to 10 kW output through the company’s home charging station.  The company provides buyers with Electrify America Network 3 years of free DC fast charging.

As the Lucid Air itself goes into production, the company’s engineers have the deepest experience of extracting maximum performance from battery packs under harsh conditions.  Lucid’s technology division, Ativa, has used several years of built-in batteries for standard-spec formula E electric race cars and how they work on all the data.  Except for no early EV-maker, Tesla is likely to have extreme conditions under its cell work.

  The future of Inside Lucid?

Other innovations from that period include a reduction in the size of the power unit, which includes electric motors, power electronics and gearing.  That unit can be sold to other manufacturers, hinted at by the execs in November, probably a kind of “Lucid Inside” branding on most vehicles.

Among the many examples of Lucid’s obsession with engineering is the idea of โ€‹โ€‹putting a new idea into a hollow centre shaft of an electric motor.  Each wheel for a motor that is lacking requires some kind of gearing to keep each pair of wheels spinning at one end or the other at different speeds when cornering.  Most of the all EVs connect a separate differential unit to the motor output shaft

The component that completely removes the motor into the burying gears.  The smallest differential unit of photos that Lucid Media refuses to take, but one reviewer called its gears “horological” or watch-like.  It is small and consequently elegant.

Another interesting aspect of Air’s engineering – and there are many – is the use of motors for continuous-wave copper winding, which facilitates mass production compared to other EV-maker motors.  Careful analysis of the motor’s electrical characteristics showed an “electromagnetic dead zone” that allowed engineers to compromise performance without route cooling channels.

   Luxury on sport

More than 100 kWh with a battery like any EV, the Lucid Air offers breathtaking speed if you have the right drive modes (Smooth, Swift and Sprint), suspension and regeneration settings.  The Dream version performance is combined with 816 kW (1,111 hp) in Sprint mode and 0-60 mph acceleration in less than 3 seconds.

All six Lucid executives have made it clear that the car is intended to compete with other large luxury sedans, not a subset of its smaller sport sedans (at least initially), so the suspension is the ultimate road rather than comfort for the tuned.

James Lickfold, Director of Chassis and Vehicle Dynamics, noted that the air has narrower tires to the size of the vehicle, which limits its adhesion.  But with its lack of air suspension, the larger Lucid combines and rides are smoother – more aggressive wheel and tire combinations with the Tesla Model S performance versions.

Although for some reason the car weighs more than 5,100 lbs, its all-aluminium structure is significantly more capable of road-holding than its lightweight.

Chief Engineer and Senior VP Eric Bach said the air can be powered by one, two or three motors.  Powertrain’s performance capabilities can be found in the prototype megawatt drive unit of the lobby, with a pair of rear motors rated at 1,000 kW (1,340 hp).  It is possible to suggest a sportier version that will emerge at the right time.

On the other end of the scale, the single-motor Pure Edition delivers a range of 408 miles, with a base price of about $ 79,000 before incentives.

A start to be taken seriously

The 2022 Lucid Air is a remarkable and impressive debut vehicle from some early automakers and can be taken seriously.  Like the Rivian in a completely different segment, it has a fully-fledged vehicle that combines capabilities with its conventional rivals.

Many obstacles remain before Lucid emerges, reaching the initial position that Tesla has taken 15 years to achieve.  The company is now the sole startup carmaker, and there is no doubt that it remains a brand.  Lucid needs to increase production beyond the target of 20,000 cars by 2022 and sell more than 17,000 Airs.

At the equal time, it should boom its provider skills and showroom footprint now no longer best withinside the US however globally. And now in order to make a contribution in the category of luxury sedans, its second vehicle, a seven-seat Gravity SUV, should be produced in a couple of years: luxury sports utilities.

Still, Lucid seems to be quietly confident in its ability to bring reporters to its headquarters, make executives available from many departments, and show off versions of its brand new car.  This is a refreshing change from the idea that the car and company can easily be worshipped.
